Las Cruces, N.M. – To help address hunger in our community and celebrate National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day on April 2, MountainView Regional Medical Center launched a Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive to collect peanut butter (and other nut butter).
MountainView Regional Medical Center placed collection barrels at the main hospital, Senior Amigos building, and Walmart stores throughout Las Cruces. Thanks to the generosity of our employees, medical staff, volunteers, and community, we donated 2,200 jars of peanut butter to Casa de Peregrinos, an emergency food pantry. Thank you to everyone who donated!
"Food insecurity significantly impacts a person's overall health and well-being," said Matt Conrad, MountainView Regional Medical Center CEO. "Through our Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive, we are working to help fight hunger in our community. Our generous employees and community stepped up to be sure we could meet our donation goals."
Peanut butter is one of the most requested items for food banks because it is highly nutritious and has a long shelf life. Unfortunately, many food banks in America report it is also one of the least donated food items.
"Casa de Peregrinos (CdP) food distribution always includes at least one or two protein items. Peanut butter is a great source, and kids especially love it," said CdP Executive Director Lorenzo Alba. "Peanut butter is a food item we can always use at CdP. Thank you, Mountain View Regional Medical Center, for joining us in our fight against hunger."
Casa de Peregrinos reports 29% of people face hunger in Dona Ana County, or 1 in 3 people. MountainView Regional Medical Center launched the Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive to help support individuals facing food insecurity, a social determinant of health.
